Animals possess unique characteristics that distinguish them from other living organisms. They are classified as eukaryotic and multicellular, setting them apart from bacteria, which are prokaryotic, and protists, which, while eukaryotic, are unicellular.

All animals engage in aerobic respiration and exhibit motility at some stage of their life cycle. However, certain species, such as sponges, corals, mussels, and barnacles, transition to a sessile lifestyle as adults.

Structurally, animals are comprised of cells that are enveloped by an extracellular matrix, primarily made up of collagen and elastic glycoproteins. This matrix is crucial during development, providing a flexible framework that allows for cellular movement and reorganization, facilitating the creation of complex anatomical structures.

Most animals derive their energy from plants through the process of photosynthesis. Herbivores consume plant matter directly, while carnivores and other higher trophic level species acquire energy by predating upon other animals.

The tourism sector in various countries has been significantly shaped by natural wildlife. For instance, South Africa offers tourists numerous opportunities to observe wildlife within renowned national parks such as Kruger National Park.

In South India, notable regions such as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Bandipur National Park, and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary are nestled within rich forest ecosystems. These parks exemplify India’s commitment to showcasing its diverse wildlife through extensive national parks and sanctuaries.

India houses a remarkable 89 national parks, 13 biosphere reserves, and over 400 wildlife sanctuaries. These protected areas provide critical habitats for species such as Bengal tigers, Asiatic lions, Indian elephants, Indian rhinoceroses, and various birds, underscoring the country's dedication to nature conservation.

Biologically, animals metabolize carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and other biomolecules to fuel growth and sustain vital processes such as locomotion. Interestingly, species inhabiting hydrothermal vents and cold seeps do not rely on photosynthesis; rather, they depend on chemosynthesis conducted by archaea and bacteria that oxidize inorganic compounds like methane to produce organic matter, forming the foundation of their localized food webs.

Many animal species hold spiritual significance across various cultures globally. The use of animals and their products as sacred objects in religious rituals exemplifies this relationship; for instance, eagles and hawks are revered by Native Americans for their cultural and spiritual importance.
